DX and Contest Forum Program

CTDXCC will have 2 excellent speakers this year:

Marvin Bloomquist (N5AW)   10:00 Grand Ballroom
World Renowned Amateur Radio Contester

Marv was born and raised in Austin. "My dad got me interested in radio when I was 11 and I bought a shortwave radio after my first summer job. Spent about a year and a half as an SWL (had difficulty with the code). In February 1955 I passed my novice and got one of the original K calls - KN5ABV. My first rig was homebrew with a single 6146 probably putting out no more than 40 watts. Once I got on the air my code speed took off and in August I passed the General. In November of 1955 I made my first contest contact with none other than KH6IJ - a call any old time contester will remember - and I've been hooked ever since. When I started I couldn't afford an amplifier and that did not change until I finished grad school in 1967. Starting in a new job and moving around I never got around to getting an amp. As the years went by I found a niche in contesting using low power that gave me a lot of satisfaction and now, after 61 years of ham radio I have never owned an amplifier."

"I got the N5AW call sign in 1974 and had to give up K5ABV not long after that. I worked in the oil industry for 33 years and while at different job locations held WA6CLR and VE6CGS. I've also operated from DX locations briefly as OA4U, K5ABV/KL7, HZ1AB, 3C5A, N5AW portable KH6, KP2, SM5 and R1."

"In 2010 I operated R31D with partner N4TZ at WRTC Moscow and was a referee at WRTC 2014 in Boston. I'm trying hard to qualify for WRTC 2018 in Germany (fingers crossed)."
